Do You Really Need an Inverter Charger?

When you’re off-grid and you have some appliances and electronic devices with you, investing in reliable power solutions should be considered. You want to make sure that they can run sufficiently and not fail when you need them most. An inverter charger can be a great choice. Based on the name, it is an inverter and an AC charger in one. The inverter uses DC power from a battery to convert it into AC power, which is guaranteed stable, with a quality that is similar to what you can experience from the grid. It is a handy product for running electronic devices and high-power drawing appliances, like the caravan air conditioner. That way, you can confidently bring the comforts of home while you’re out having an adventure!

But do you really need one? Read on to find out:

Understanding how it works

The inverter charger charges batteries when there is power availability; and when there’s no generator or mains power, it should provide 240v output. It eliminates the need to get separate components or units, so it is easier to install and set up.

When used in an RV or boat, it comes with an internal transfer switch to automatically detect when you are using another power source. Then, it will transfer any power load to the new AC power source to use that to start the battery. Without that feature, you would have to work the transfer switch manually or unplug the appliances and reconnect them to the other power source. The charger shuts down when unplugged and the transfer relay should revert to inverter power.

An inverter charger usually has a remote panel that lets you oversee the overall batter level and usage. You can customize the settings based on the battery type and other relevant factors, so you can extend battery life.

Why you need it

If you’re using an off-grid solar power system in your RV, it makes sense to invest in a good inverter charger to convert the generator’s AC power to charge the DC battery bank. Basically, it will be useful if you have any other form of reliable battery backup.
